The Blair Atholl Golf Club still exists, you can view the official website here. Nestled in the idyllic Scottish village of Blair Atholl, boasts a rich history dating back to 1896. Originally designed by James Braid, the course has captivated golfers with its fascinating combination of beauty and challenge.
The nine-hole course, played twice for an 18-hole round, stretches to over 5000 yards and poses a par of 70, making it a remarkable test for golfers of all skill levels. Its setting, just off the A9, within undulating parklands and towering Scots pines, offers a unique and enthralling golfing experience. Golfers have to deftly navigate around strategically placed ponds, recent additions that beautifully blend with the local stonework, enhancing the course’s aesthetic and strategic characteristics.
Braid’s intelligent use of natural contours is evident in the variety of holes. The par threes are a prime example, presenting the challenge of club selection that varies from a 4-iron to a wedge on windy days. A standout among these is a full drive along the edge of the River Garry, arguably one of the most challenging holes in Scotland. The course also provides an intriguing mix of open driving holes and shorter par fours that reward accuracy and audacity in equal measure. The final par five leads up to the clubhouse, its approach framed by sentinel pines protecting the home green, encapsulating the course’s compelling blend of beauty and challenge.
Beyond the course, the golfing experience extends to the clubhouse, where golfers can unwind after their round with a refreshing drink and a well-deserved meal. Visiting parties of eight or more can benefit from several golfing and catering packages, with options ranging from a simple offering of bacon roll, tea or coffee, and 18 holes with soup and a sandwich, to an upgraded package that includes a two-course meal. Tailored packages are also available, underlining the club’s commitment to satisfying the individual needs of its guests.
Golfers seeking an enriching golfing community will find a thriving one at Blair Atholl. With an increasing gents membership and a collection of quality golfers, the club holds regular weekly competitions and events throughout the year. Medal rounds for both 18 and 9 holes are played on Thursdays, with tee-off times at 10.30pm and 5.45pm, and a 9-hole competition on Saturdays at 11.30am.
A true gem in Scotland’s golfing crown, Blair Atholl Golf Club lives by the welcoming motto: “From the high handicapper to the scratch golfer, Blair Atholl welcomes all.” As a small, friendly club, they open their arms to new members, making it a treasured locale for golfers seeking a welcoming environment, an inviting challenge, and scenic views.
